World Travel and
Tourism Council (WTTC) has announced, on the 3rd of April, granting
Egypt the Global Champion Award 2019 for its efforts to promote tourism resilience. The award
has been received by the Egyptian
Minister of Tourism, Mrs. Rania al-Mashat.
This announcement
has come during the “2019 Global Summit” Gala dinner that was held in Seville
in Spain, between the 2nd till 4th of April. “This annual
award is usually granted as an appreciation of the efforts exerted by some
countries in facing challenges” the WTTC highlighted in a statement for the
council, “this is the first time for a country or a minister in the Middle East
to be granted such an award” the statement added.
In a report, the
WTTC said that the tourism sector in Egypt has managed to recover, specially
under the supervision of Mrs. Al Mashat. In 2018,
the number of tourists has increased by 16.5 percent, which is higher than the
global average of (3.9 percent).
This recovery comes
as a result of the state's efforts to improve the local security situation,
which helped in attracting more visitors and encouraged the big tourism agencies
worldwide to increase their business in new tourist developments on both coasts
of the Red Sea and the Mediterranean.
According to the
WTTC statement, Mrs. Al Mashat declared that the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism
has adopted a new perspective through the Egyptian Tourism Reform Program
(E-TRP), that was launched to develop the sector by implementing structural
reforms that strengthen Egypt’s competitiveness and to maintain a sustainable tourism standard.
Her excellency Mrs. Mashat
expressed appreciation of the Global Champion Award granted by the WTTC, adding
that Egypt's objective in developing tourism is to enable at least one member
of every Egyptian family to be involved in the sector, in a direct or indirect way.
Gloria Guevara,
President and CEO of WTTC, said that Egyptian tourism sector, under the leadership
of Al-Mashat “has shown the meaning of real recovery of travel and tourism
following a period of crisis, recognizing the power of tourism sector as a
driver of economic growth, job creation and social advancement across the whole
country.”
Worth to be
mentioned that President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has recently been awarded the UNTWO’S shield, in appreciation of
his active role in supporting the tourism industry.
